Benefit 5: Co-locate virtually
We’ve already spent some time discussing the capabilities of “Collaboration for Revit” (C4R) to enable working from anywhere and how this as a huge benefit (blog 3).
In this post, let’s dive a little deeper into what the capabilities are to support a ‘virtual’ project team.
In fact, the workflow we discussed before, allows us to co-create, no matter where we are and to return feedback as a reviewer without the need to passively wait for data to be sent by drafters and engineers. But how do we follow up as a designer on this feedback? When being located in the same room, it’s easy to sit down together and explain markups, get information from others, etc. but what if the whole team is geographically dispersed?
Within BIM 360 Team (the storage location of the central file of C4R and in fact, all project related information), we can setup users to be either editors or viewers (or Project Admin, but we won’t cover this specific role in this blog post).
This gives us the freedom to specify who should be reviewing information and who can manipulate and modify the source data. In other words: the viewer role can look at information and mark up the documents, but they can’t edit the files themselves, supporting a workflow in which data is being created, then passed on for review, after which the team members are notified of the data having reviewing information. The editors can then update the design files accordingly.
Another aspect of the C4R/BIM 360 team workflow which supports a virtual project office, is the live review functionality on BIM 360 Team. If the designer needs additional information, he can initiate a meeting in which the live data is central: all reviewers are looking at the same information at the same time, allowing them to have a conversation in the live review chat window on the issue at hand.
From a cost point-of-view, co-location is a huge timesaver: people don’t need to fly in, offices don’t need to be rented/bought, no need to book rooms to have review sessions, etc. C4R and BIM 360 Team have been conceived to support exactly these workflows: bringing design teams virtually together without the need for expensive office or IT infrastructure.
